Connecting Cambodia Through Cross-border Logistics and E-commerce

March 18, 2019

Phnom Penh, 19th March 2019 – Cambodia has the potential of leveraging e-commerce to improve accessibility and efficiency to customers, retailers, markets and trade information. Its benefits are not only limited to international trade, but also prominent for boosting domestic markets.

“As Cambodia strives to strengthen its Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), digital transformation will help the Kingdom position itself to capture both the domestic and international market potential,” says Nick Beresford, UNDP Resident Representative.

Digital economy is already reshaping Cambodia by changing the way we order meals, pay for goods, grab a tuk-tuk, book a hotel or shop for clothes. These services have offered a much more convenient way of connecting customers with online sellers. This has led to the development of sectors in the economy sustaining higher levels of economic productivity. The e-commerce ecosystem aims to be inclusive and accessible for all – spearheaded by three main groups: the government, businesses and individuals/consumers. It is an ecosystem that will provide job opportunities through its expansion, diversification and innovation –opening up new employment methods for startups, MSMEs and others and supporting skills and technical development.

“The Royal Government of Cambodia is committed to fostering an investor friendly ecosystem through the National Logistics Council to help address the challenges in logistics and efficiency of the flow of goods and services,” says H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and Permanent Vice Chair of the Cambodia National Logistics Council.

This partnership between 4PX Express Co., Ltd. and UNDP, building on the strengths of both organizations, works with domestic and global stakeholders to streamline efficiency and overcome bottlenecks. An economy with a robust e-commerce sector requires some fundamental reforms – moving products faster and quickly resolving logistical challenges.

“Cross-Border Logistics will provide the means for Cambodia to benefit from regional e-commerce dynamics prompted by the ASEAN integration. It would also help Cambodia to benefit from major investments by the global e-commerce and logistics players within the country”, says Yue (KEVIN) Li, CEO of 4PX Express Co., Ltd.

The potential of e-commerce in Cambodia is significant and promising. It should be seen as an opportunistic tool to open more doors of opportunities for the domestic market to prosper and be recognized in the global market.
