EVENT: CITIES OF THE FUTURE

September 28, 2018

Impact Hub Phnom Penh and UNDP Cambodia are excited to announce the event ‘Cities of the Future’, an event to showcase and discuss innovations, challenges and opportunities facing Phnom Penh and other ASEAN cities today, in order to make them smarter, more sustainable, and safer. There will be booths of young startups already working in the smart cities/sustainable mobility sectors, and keynote addresses from including Country Director of UNDP Cambodia Nick Beresford, Her Excellency Koy Sodany, Under Secretary of State, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and Freddie Tinga, Founder of Global Electric Transport and ex-Mayor of Taguig City, one of the fastest growing cities in the Philippines.

We will also be launching our newest entrepreneurship program, The Urban Mobility Incubator – supported by Grab and UNDP Cambodia. This is a program under the larger partnership SUMAI, which was successfully launched a few months ago. (Find further details on this at the end),

“Recognizing the fundamental role of sustainable transport in achieving the future we want, the SUMAI project aims to support integrated sustainable urban transport solutions by reinforcing national capacities and systems strengthening, while stimulating innovations in smart transport solutions to accelerate progress on safety and mobility for all”, shared Mr. Nick Beresford, UNDP Cambodia Country Director.

We will be looking for aspiring entrepreneurs with ideas and projects in urban mobility- this means transport, road safety, air pollution, and solutions that will help us move around the city efficiently, safely, and more sustainably. They will be matched with expert mentors in the fields of transport, smart cities, and tech, from all across the ASEAN region.

ABOUT SUMAI:

SUMAI is the first year of a public private initiative to foster cleaner, safer, and more sustainable urban mobility and transport options for all in Cambodia. The program, created by UNDP and supported by Grab, comprises various initiatives with different partners (including projects on air pollution monitoring, a conference to raise awareness on renewable energies, an incubation program, mobility research projects, and more) and Impact Hub Phnom Penh will be involved in creating and supporting a one year incubation program focusing on urban mobility for early-stage startups.

Transport is key to support economic and social development necessary to achieve many targets of Cambodia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG9 (building resilient infrastructure), and SDG11 (sustainable cities and communities) among others. It particularly contributes to the SDG11’s target 2 which ensures that everyone, particularly, women, children, persons with disabilities and old persons have access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems by 2030.
