    More mine-free land released to Cambodian farmers

    Mine clearance operations supported by UNDP have just released 26.5 square kilometres of land for productive use by Cambodian farmers after it was cleared of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) in 2014. The land is expected to benefit some 35,000 villagers – 54 percent of whom are women – in three northwestern provinces of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Pailin.

    Cambodia’s human development index value continues to rise in 2014

    In July, UNDP launched the 2014 Human Development Report (HDR) globally from Tokyo, focusing on reducing vulnerabilities and building resilience. Cambodia’s Human Development Index (HDI) value for 2013 is 0.584 – which is in the medium human development category – ranking it at 136 out of 187 countries and territories.

    Cambodia’s trade strategy tackles skills gap to boost competitiveness

    Phnom Penh – Cambodia has released a new trade strategy which puts focus on the need to improve skills of the workforce to boost the country’s export competitiveness and job creation in the future. Tackling skills gap is an urgent priority especially when the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community in 2015 is nearing. The regional economic integration, coupled with up to 400,000 Cambodian youths expected to enter job market each year, will present not just opportunities but also challenges to the country, government and UN officials said during the launch of Cambodia Trade Integrated Strategy (CTIS) 2014-2018.

    Switzerland gives US$3 million for mine action in Cambodia

    Phnom Penh – Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has given US$ 3 million for mine clearance in Cambodia. The fund will be used to support various activities under the Clearing for Results Phase II (CfR) project, which is implemented by Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA) and managed by UNDP, until the end of 2015.

    Work underway for Cambodia Human Development Report 2014

    Phnom Penh – The need to improve education quality and develop a skilled work force is the focus of the Cambodia Human Development Report (CHDR) which is planned for release in mid-2014. The report will be titled as “Investing in Human Development on the Road to Inclusive Growth.” Work on it is now underway following a consultation meeting that UNDP held with representatives of the government ministries and development partners on 8 August 2013.

    Cambodia, China and UNDP launch joint cassava project

    Phnom Penh – A trilateral agriculture project worth US$400,000 provided by China has been unveiled to assist Cambodia in boosting its cassava production for export. Senior officials from Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and UNDP in Cambodia signed an agreement at a launching ceremony on Tuesday, 21 May, formally kick-starting implementation of the China-Cambodia-UNDP Trilateral Cooperation Cassava Project – Phase II.

    Petroleum policy drafting forges ahead

    Phnom Penh– The Cambodian government says it is forging ahead with the drafting of a crucial policy paper designed to regulate and manage the country’s petroleum sector in the future. The Cambodian National Petroleum Authority (CNPA), on January 11, held a one-day meeting with representatives of relevant ministries, non-governmental organizations and United Nations Development Programme to obtain comments on possible improvement to the draft National Petroleum Policy Framework.
